Athos, the Holy Mountain
Philip Sherrard photos by Takis Zervoulakos
Mount Athos is the last remaining bastion of Byzantine culture and Orthodox monasticism, a microcosm of mediaeval Europe that has lingered into the 21st century. The photographs and text have caught the atmosphere of the centuries-old monastic buildings, the isolation of the hermitages perched on vertical cliffs, the glorious wall paintings, icons and relics, and above all the lives of the monks themselves.
